Special Action The Showdown

The Showdown is a special action that can occur during a conflict that creates a subconflict between two characters. A Showdown can only occur between a player character and a threat or named character (not minions). It consists of six phases: The Declare, the Staredown, the Twitch, the Tick, the Draw, and the Action. All of which occur in a single panel.

The Declare – If a player declares a Showdown against an enemy the GM must decide to either accept the the Showdown, or refuse. If the GM refuses the enemy reieves the temporary aspect “cowardly” and the character gains a fate point. If the GM declares a showdown against a player character the player must either accept or refuse and recieve a -2 for the remainder of the page and lose a fate point. If the target opponent agrees the Showdown moves to the second phase.

The Staredown – the two opponents roll a contested Intimidation roll, staring one another down. The winner may either recieve a +1 to the Action phase, or place a temporary aspect on their opponent.

The Twitch – the two opponents roll a contested Physical Fitness roll, daring the other to act first. The winner may either recieve a +1 to the Action phase or place a temporary aspect on their opponent.

The Tick – the two opponents roll a contested Mental Vigor roll, timing their reactions to that of their enemy. The winner may either recieve a +1 to the Action phase or place a temporary aspect on their opponent.

The Draw – the two opponents roll a contested action skill roll based on their attack of choice, readying their weapon or attack. The winner may either recieve a +1 to the Action phase or place a temporary aspect on their enemy.

The Action – the two opponents roll a contested action skill roll based on their attack of choice, metal clanging, shots ringing, or muscles straining as the two join in single combat. The winner does damage equal to the number of shifts on their roll.

If the defender has not acted for the page yet, they lose their action. If they have already acted, they lose their action for the next page.

Any other character attempting to interact with the two characters involved in a Showdown in any way suffer a -2 penalty to their result.
